The Battle for Bulga

John Krey’s home near the tiny town of Bulga is just a few kilometers away from three of the largest open cut coal mines in the Hunter Valley: Mount Thorley Warkworth (owned by Rio Tinto), the Bulga mine (Glencore-Xtrata), and Wambo (Peabody Energy).

Proposed extensions to the Mount Thorley Warkworth site would bring the mine right up to the edge of the village.

The local community has fought legal battles opposing the extension, which will destroy almost 500 hectares of endangered ecology, and bring radical changes to the character of the village and the landscape.
